Cargo Services

The Cargo Services business unit is focussed on the provision of tailored and dedicated shipping services to remote mining operations.

P&O Maritime Services provides management and operation services for Zinifex’s self discharging bulk carrier MV Wunma.  The vessel operates from the port of Karumba on the south eastern side of the Gulf of Carpentaria in north Queensland, Australia.  This operation supports Zinifex’s Century Mine, the largest zinc and lead mine in Australia.

Carpentaria Shipping Services
Carpentaria Shipping Services (CSS) was established in 1995 to provide shipping and logistic support services to Xstrata’s McArthur River Mine on the Gulf of Carpentaria in the Northern Territory, Australia.  CSS is a partnership between the traditional land owning communities of the district: Mawa Riinbi, Indigenous Business Australia, headquartered in Canberra and P&O Maritime Services.  P&O Maritime Services is a 50% shareholder and manager on behalf of the partnership.

Service delivery is centred around a purpose built self discharging bulk carrier, MV Aburri, operating from the port of Bing Bong near the Sir Edward Pellew group of islands on the western side of the Gulf of Carpentaria.  CSS owns and operates the vessel to transport zinc concentrate from the port to export vessels.

P&O Maritime Services (PNG)
P&O Maritime Services (PNG) provides specialised bulk cargo and research services in Papua New Guinea and it employs more than 190 staff and operates in Port Moresby, Kiunga and Lihir.

Western Tug and Barge Company Ltd (WTB) is the shipowning division of P&O Maritime Services in Papua New Guinea.  WTB’s fleet includes six specialised bulk carriers, a navigational aids maintenance vessel and an environmental research vessel.   These vessels are operated in support of Ok Tedi Mine operations.  The bulk carriers transport copper concentrate 1,308 kilometres down the Fly River.

WTB also operates a fleet of barges for Lihir Gold’s mining operations on Lihir Island.
